  • CPE unit fees are set by the outside institution offering the CPE unit
  • Qualified residents of Nova Scotia are eligible for a reduction in tuition bursary under the Province of Nova Scotia University Student Bursary Program.
  • Tuition fees for senior citizens (persons sixty-five years of age or older as of June 1 in any given academic year) is one-half of the regular course fee for undergraduate and graduate courses. Diploma, Directed Studies, Audit, Thesis, and CPE credit authentication fees are all payable at the regular rate. Fees for CPE Units offered through an outside institution (e.g. Nova Scotia Health Authority) and for which AST authenticates academic credit are payable according to the fee schedule set by the outside institution.
  • Tuition for AST faculty and staff (employed at AST at 50% time or more) and their immediate family members is one-half of the regular tuition fee for undergraduate and graduate courses. Diploma, Directed Studies, Audit, Thesis, and CPE credit authentication fees are all payable at the regular rate.  Fees for CPE Units offered through an outside institution (e.g. Nova Scotia Health Authority) and for which AST authenticates academic credit are payable according to the fee schedule set by the outside institution.
  • Tuition for Saint Mary’s University faculty and their immediate family members is one-half of the regular tuition fee for undergraduate and graduate courses. Diploma, Directed Studies, Audit, Thesis, and CPE credit authentication fees are all payable at the regular rate. Fees for CPE Units offered through an outside institution (e.g. Nova Scotia Health Authority) and for which AST authenticates academic credit are payable according to the fee schedule set by the outside institution.

Charges Relating to Course Withdrawals

  • Changes in course registration must be completed by the student in Banner in accordance with the Course Withdrawal and Refund Schedule in the “Course Changes and Course Withdrawals” section of the Academic Calendar.
  • Tuition is refunded in accordance with the Course Withdrawal and Refund Schedule. Exceptions to the withdrawal and refund schedule may be granted for reasons of health and/or other substantial reasons with the approval of the Academic Dean.

Student Union Fees (for BTh, GCTS, MA, and MDiv Programs only)

An agreement between the AST Student Union (ASTSU) and the Saint Mary's University Student Association (SMUSA) provides for a number of services to AST students enrolled in the BTh, GCTS, MA, or MDiv programs. This includes access to SMU's health centre, fitness centre, Husky Patrol Safe Drive Access as well as a variety of sports, social and education events.

  • All students registered as a full time student in a term qualify for the UPass.
    A full-time student is a BTh, GCTS, MA, or MDiv student taking 2 or more credits in one term.
    The UPass is full, unlimited access to Halifax Metro Transit services for the duration of the academic year. If you want the UPass you must obtain a letter from the Registrar indicating you are a full time student and the UPass can be picked up at SMU, Monday-Thursday, 9 am-5 pm, on the fifth floor of the Student Centre.

Notes about Medical and Dental Coverage

  • All students registered in 0.5 academic credit or more will be automatically billed and enrolled in the
    SMUSA Extended Health & Dental Plan unless they choose to Opt-Out.

  • Students with alternative and comparable private extended health and/or dental coverage can apply to opt-out during the appropriate opt-out period.

    Applications must be submitted during the opt-out period in which students begin studies for that academic year:
    - Opt-Out period for students starting in September: August 15 - September 25
    - Opt-Out period for students starting in January: December 15 - January 25  
    - Opt-Out period for students starting in Summer term: June 15 - July 25     

    To OPT OUT, students must provide proof of existing insurance and sign a waiver at the SMUSA office (5th floor of the O’Donnell Hennessey Student Centre, Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.). 

    Opt-outs do not carry over to the following policy year and must be completed each academic year.

Tuition and Administration Policies

Tuition Fee Payment Due Dates

  • Summer term tuition: Due by June 21, 2024
  • Fall term tuition: Due by September 18, 2024
  • Winter term tuition: Due by January 22, 2025

Late Payment Charges

  • Students who do not pay all amounts owing to AST by the dates noted above are subject to
    late payment charges and may be required to leave classes until the balance owing is cleared.
    The charges are $5 for each business day the account is in arrears, to a maximum of $50 per
    semester or ten percent (10%) of the outstanding balance, whichever is the lesser. Students who
    delay payments because they are awaiting student loan funds must provide a copy of their loan
    application to the Business Office.

Refunds

  • Tuition is refunded in accordance with the Course Withdrawal and Refund Schedule (2023-2024)
    in the “Course Changes and Course Withdrawals” section of the Academic Calendar. Exceptions to
    the withdrawal and refund schedule may be granted for reasons of health and/or other
    substantial reasons with the approval of the Registrar.

Unpaid Balances

  • All fees and outstanding debts to AST are to be paid upon registration at the beginning of each term.
    Please ensure that your account is settled with the Business Office before the end of each term.
  • NOTE: Students who have an outstanding balance owing to AST will not be permitted to register for
    subsequent courses until the balance is paid in full.
