The Rev. Alison Etter Memorial Fund
|
The Rev. Alison Etter, part of AST’s community of alumni, was a beautiful person who radiated love. She showed great spirit, wisdom, creativity, and compassion in her ministry and in her life. She was a builder of communities, a reformer of systems, a lifelong learner, and a pilgrim. Alison was a person of deep solidarity and a loyal friend. Alison died on Valentine’s Day, 2024, after an illness of three months. She was just 41. |

The Rev. Alison Etter Memorial Fund was established by Alison’s family at AST. It has grown thanks to the generosity of friends, organizations, and people who have been impacted by Alison. The Fund is carrying on Alison’s legacy. The Fund is intended to directly support AST alumni (graduates of any degree, diploma, or certificate program), lay or ordained, of any denomination or spiritual tradition. It is a perpetual fund that will make annual grants from returns on ethical investments. We are very pleased to issue the first call for expressions of interest. You could receive a grant of up to $2,500 for a project or for continuing education by alumni that reflects Alison’s work and values. The theme this year is “MUSIC FOR CHANGE.” This year, we would like to support a project or initiative that uses music in some way. Music was an important part of Alison’s education, ministry, and public engagement. Are you working on a composition that might change hearts and minds? Are you offering music classes or musical instruments in marginalized communities? Are you working on developing a musical playground in your community? Are you doing a musical project connected to an anniversary (eg. UC centenary or other milestones) that will have an impact? Are you doing a project that involves music in inter-cultural sharing? Are you developing a new musical ministry or outreach? Or would you work on a project that involves music if you had some seed funding? These questions are intended to spark a few thoughts. Application Procedure
Recipients will be asked to sign a memorandum of understanding, which will include progress reports and transmission of information about their projects. We know there are many demands on your time. Your submission can be brief or point- form. The committee will follow up with questions. Before putting something in writing, we invite you to consider consulting Alison’s obituary: https://vjmcgillivray.ca/tribute/details/2075/Rev-Alison-Etter-Glace-Bay/obituary.html#tribute-start Also, a children’s book in Alison’s memory -- telling Alison’s two-year-old son, Oliver, about his mom’s life and work -- has recently been published. Royalties are going to the Alison Fund. The book is called You Are Loved. We invite you to consult this book as well. It is already in some libraries, and it can be purchased by going to https://capebretonbooks.com/ . It would mean a lot to us – and to Alison’s legacy – to hear about your intended project. Peace and blessings. With heartfelt appreciation, |
