Step 1
Review courses offered by SMU on Self Service Banner
Step 2
Consult with your AST faculty advisor about how this course will fit into your program and fulfill your degree requirements. This is a key step – don't skip it!
Step 3

- If you are an MDiv or BTh student, please complete this online form. Once your Faculty Advisor has signed off you will need to follow the instructions in the following document: Information for Visiting AST Students

- If you are an MA student, please follow the below steps.
  • If the course is not offered at a graduate level, ask the SMU instructor if they are willing to upgrade it for you, so that it can count as a graduate credit.
  • Pay the AST Business Office the tuition and fees owing. E-transfer is preferred: businessoffice@astheology.ns.ca

For AST students:
  • Students enrolled in a program at AST must have written permission to take courses outside AST for credit in their program. A student must first discuss plans to take courses offered by an external institution with her or his Faculty Advisor.
  • Students must complete a Letter of Permission form and have it approved by their Faculty Advisor.
For non AST students looking to take a course at AST as a Letter of Permission student:

AST welcomes students from other universities who wish to take one or more courses at AST and apply those credits toward their degree programs at their home university. Students must obtain a Letter of Permission from their educational institution authorizing registration at AST. The Letter of Permission must be attached to the required LOP Student Information form.

PT 3901 and PT 3902
AST, in conjunction with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC), offers accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) opportunities in healthcare settings. Through hands-on clinical experience, supervision, and reflective theological practice, students develop skills and professional identity in spiritual care.
All CPE units registered for credit through AST will form part of a student’s academic record. CPE units will be designated as PT 3901 or PT 3902 on a transcript for the term in which the unit is completed. Academic credit for CPE falls in the area of electives in pastoral theology. One basic unit of CPE is valued at two (2.0) credits and consists of 400 clinical hours, divided among direct service, supervision, clinical presentations, didactic seminars, and peer group work. A maximum of two CPE credits may be counted toward the BTh or the MDiv program requirements.
In addition to fees payable (through AST) to the institution providing the CPE program (usually a hospital), students must pay a CPE credit authentication fee to AST.
For information on taking this course through Nova Scotia Health please view the NS Health Website.
You must apply directly to the institution providing the CPE program. For NS Health, the application form can be found here—Spiritual Care Clinical Pastoral Education Application.
Once accepted into the CPE program with NSH, please complete this form and attach your pre-placement requirement documents to the form. NS Health has many pre-placement requirements that must be met before a student can begin their placement.

For additional information, or if you have questions about textbook lists, please contact the Academic Office at astacademic@astheology.ns.ca.

  • All students who plan to graduate must complete the Graduation Application online form by November 20. This application is essential whether you plan to attend the graduation ceremony in person or participate in absentia. Make sure that your application is submitted by the deadline to be included in the graduation review process.
  • At the time of application, please make sure you are registered in all courses required to complete your program requirements. It's important to consult with your Faculty Advisor to ensure that you will have completed all the necessary courses for graduation.

To request a transcript from Atlantic School of Theology, please complete a Transcript Request Form. If you require additional information in making your request, please email the Registrar.
